Kate
Hi everyone! Today I'm really excited to introduce you all to Carlos Mendes, an amazing 3D artist who has joined us recently to share his incredible work. I must say, I love his creations, especially the military models—they are so detailed and impressive! Carlos, can you tell us a bit about yourself?
Carlos
Hey Kate, thank you so much for the kind words! I'm really happy to be here. So, I'm Carlos Mendes, and I'm from a city called Fortaleza in Brazil. It's a beautiful coastal city, and I find a lot of inspiration in the contrasts between nature and the urban environment here.
Kate
Fortaleza sounds like a lovely place! How long have you been working with 3D art?
Carlos
I've been doing 3D art for around ten years now. I actually started when I was still in high school. At first, it was just a hobby—I was always fascinated by tanks, planes, and all things military. I wanted to recreate them in 3D, and that's how I got started. I just kept at it, and over time, it turned into a full career.
Kate
That's so interesting! What made you decide to focus specifically on military models?
Carlos
I think it goes back to my childhood. My dad was really into military history, and we used to watch documentaries and visit museums together. I always found the design and engineering behind military vehicles fascinating. There's something about the combination of functionality and raw power that drew me in. When I started doing 3D art, it felt natural to focus on what I was most passionate about.
Kate
That definitely shows in your work! The detail you put into every model is incredible. Do you have a particular process when you’re creating these military pieces?
Carlos
Thanks, Kate! Yeah, I do have a process. I always start with a lot of research—I gather reference photos, blueprints, and even watch videos if I can find them. I want to make sure I get every little detail right. Then I move into Blender to create the base model, focusing on the major shapes first. After that, I go into the finer details and texturing, making sure everything looks realistic. It’s a long process, but I really enjoy it.
Kate
That sounds like a lot of dedication! What has been your favorite project so far?
Carlos
My favorite project has to be the model of the WWII Sherman tank I did last year. It was a real challenge because of all the small details—the bolts, the tracks, the wear and tear. But it was also super rewarding. I wanted to make it as historically accurate as possible, and I think it turned out pretty well.
Kate
Wow, I bet it did! What advice would you give to someone who’s just getting started with 3D modeling, especially with complex subjects like military models?
Carlos
I think the best advice is to be patient and keep practicing. Military models can be really complex, and it’s easy to get overwhelmed at first. Start with simpler models and work your way up. And don’t be afraid to make mistakes—that’s how you learn. The 3D art community is super helpful too, so don’t hesitate to reach out and ask questions.
Kate
That’s such good advice, Carlos. Thank you so much for sharing your story and your passion with us today. It’s been great to get to know you better!
Carlos
Thanks, Kate! It’s been a pleasure talking to you. I’m really excited to be part of this community, and I can't wait to share more of my work.
Kate
We’re looking forward to it! Everyone, make sure to keep an eye out for more of Carlos's amazing military models.
